MEMBERSHIP
The following lists the steps needed to become a member of the Knights of Columbus, the largest religious lay organization in the world.  The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to more than 13,000 councils and 1.8 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam and Saipan.

Becoming a Knight

Membership is open to all practical Catholic men, aged 18 or older, in communion with the Holy See.  For anyone meeting those criteria, these are the basic steps to join the order.

Step 1. Application (Form 100)

Either on an invidividual or group basis, we explain what the order stands for and does, and what Council 8240 does.  Then the prospective Knight will complete an application to join the order.

Step 2. Admission Interview

On an individual basis, a member of the Membership Committee will contact the propective Brother and further explain our programs and committees, answer any questions, and ensure that we understand the prospective Brother’s perspective on the Order.

Step 3. Council Meeting Review

At the next Council business meeting, the prospective Brother Knight’s application is read and documented in the meeting minutes.

Step 4. First Degree Exemplification

 The prospective Brother Knight attends a First Degree ceremony and joins the order.  It is called an exemplification, because the ceremony is based on exemplifying or teaching about the first tenet of the Order, Charity.  He also pays his initiation fee and the first year’s dues.
